Must-See Attractions in Downtown Houston

When thinking of places to visit in Houston, most people think of the Museum District or The Galleria. But there’s so much more to this city than that. In fact, Downtown Houston has undergone a complete transformation over the last few decades. Once considered not much more than an after-work drinking spot, today’s Downtown is an exciting urban center filled with historic landmarks, new businesses, and plenty of things to do. Let’s take a look at some of the best attractions downtown has to offer.

Discovery Green

When it comes to must-see attractions in Downtown Houston, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better place. Discovery Green is the city’s downtown park and green space that was built on the site of the old City Hall, which was demolished in 2005. You’ll find plenty of public art, restaurants, and activities at the park, which is one of the city’s most popular places to visit. There’s a live music series every summer, as well as an ice skating rink during the winter months. Discovery Green also hosts many festivals and events throughout the year, including the popular Buffalo Bayou Festival. More about Houston, TX here.

The Houston Astros: Home of the World Champs!

If you’re a baseball fan and you’re visiting during the season, you should absolutely stop by the Houston Astros’ stadium, Minute Maid Park, which is located in the heart of Downtown. The Astros have one of the most loyal fanbases in all of sports, and tickets are always sold out. You won’t want to miss out on a chance to see the team play in their new home. The stadium underwent a massive renovation in 2017, after the World Series Championship and it now features the largest video board in all of professional baseball. Not to mention the team just won again in 2022 and should retain most of its players next year. They are always a fun team to watch.

Houston Museum of Natural Science

If you’re a fan of science, history, or wildlife, this is one of the best museums you’ll ever visit. The Houston Museum of Natural Science is located in Downtown just a short walk from Discovery Green. The building itself is worth a visit, as it’s a beautiful architectural creation. There are a ton of fascinating exhibits at this museum, including the Human Health and Evolution exhibit, which explores the benefits and harms of technology. There’s also a stunning butterfly exhibit, mini-planetarium, and much more.

Downtown Aquarium

If you have kids, the Downtown Aquarium is a must-see attraction in Houston. This huge aquarium is filled with thousands of aquatic animals from all over the world, including sharks, stingrays, penguins, and much more. There are attractions for both kids and adults at the aquarium, including a giant carousel, a mermaid show, and an amazing Ferris wheel. You may want to make a full day out of it, as there’s so much to do.
